Ceramic artist Alison Shelton Brown and glaze scientist Linda Bloomfield will discuss their different approaches to making glazes and will give a talk and demonstration on making and understanding glazes.

Alison Shelton Brown studied ceramics at Camberwell School of Art in the early 80s where the late master potter Colin Pearson attempted to impart his extensive wisdom on technical glazes. Sadly, this was an uphill struggle for Alison who didn’t do chemistry O-level, however, with years of experimenting and by treating glazes like a cooking recipe, she uses an intuitive feel for the interactions that go on within the layers of glazes she applies to her sculptural ceramic pieces.

Linda Bloomfield trained in Engineering Science at Warwick University. She worked as a research scientist in Japan and at Imperial College London before having children and setting up her studio pottery business. She has written several books on glazes and makes thrown porcelain tableware and ceramic art pieces inspired by lichens.
