Work Experience Diaries
Thu 18 Jul 2024
Students from various schools in Sleaford, spent 4 days gaining work experience at the Hub, by helping in the preparation for the drop-in summer activities starting Tue 23 Jul. We each did this as we all have different interests for our various creative industry’s we intend to go into. Our passions include photography, digital media, and art though all medias, while others are using this experience to just gain new skills that can be transferred.
“Having experience of website design for a business, will be very beneficial for various industries as I have learnt transferable skills through the Hub.” - Work experience student 2024
Paper Pop-Up Houses
To start off our work experience, we all took part in creating paper pop-up houses. This was our starting activity for the theme of Paperwork which is the newest exhibition for the Hub. We all designed the houses in our own style, using recycled art supplies. We did this so they can be used as examples for the summer family workshops.
Paper Lanterns
For this activity, we participated in a group project, which was designing a diverse display of lanterns, which resulted in a unique arrangement of styles and sizes. This will be along side the paper houses, as a display and an example for the younger kids and families to be inspired by. We liked this task, because although it is targeted for a younger audience, it can be simple, but made more complex for the older age range to be entertained as well.
Anna Cook’s Exhibition Review
The exhibition we are reviewing is “A Paper Tale” by Anna Cook, currently showing in the Ground Floor Gallery. She is a paper artist who creates intricate layered pieces, usually of woodland animals and birds, out of hand-cut and sculpted paper. She started creating these pieces in 2016 and is inspired by “an obsession with old botanical drawings and the beauty of the natural world” (Anna Cook, www.annacookpaperart.co.uk) which shows in her portrayal of these animals and plants.
One of our favourite pieces we saw was “Cheeky Chappie”. In this picture she has conveyed her love for wildlife and the natural world through the great care taken in the creation of her pieces. She has surrounded the bird in layers of leaves in various shades to create dimension within the piece. Her art is very skilfully done and can take her days or sometimes weeks to make which makes it even more inspiring to see all of the work and dedication she has put into them.
This is understandable when you notice the detail used including the paper being curved, adding to the 3D effect, and the definition pressed into each sheet to add depth and character to the creatures.
We looked into the visitors log where they can leave their thoughts to get the publics’ perceptions of these pieces.
“Jaw dropping, so intricate”
“Love the intricacy and pattern of these pieces, such patience.”
“Extraordinarily beautiful work, attention to detail amazing”
