Working from his West Sussex workshop, Payne turns bowls, tall forms and sculptural fruit from local and sustainable hardwoods. Guided by two core designs; flared or straight sided, he follows the natural flow of each piece as it emerges on the lathe.

Payne’s practice combines traditional techniques with contemporary detail. He often ebonises high‑tannin woods using iron acetate, a centuries‑old method that darkens the timber while preserving its grain. Open‑grained species such as oak and sapele are then lime‑waxed to create striking contrast, and beading is used to enhance both texture and touch.

Turning since 2020, Payne continues to refine a personal style rooted in craftsmanship, experimentation and the quiet focus of his garden workshop.
