About Janie Knitted Textiles
Jane and Michael are knitted textile designer makers, developing contemporary fabrics with traditional techniques using hand and powered domestic knitting machines. They started their practice after redundancy in the early 2000’s from Knitwear design. Jane has a 1st class degree in Knitwear design and Michael has technical knitwear and manufacturing experience, they began their practice by designing and knitting freelance from home.
Since 2011 they have occupied a rural studio at Welbeck in Nottinghamshire where they hand make interior accessories, lighting and soft furnishings using British wool and merino wools sourced from UK suppliers. Commissions for individuals and interior designers form the greater part of their work together with supplying stores across the UK.
The creative work in their practice is a direct response to environmental colours, textures and the materials they use and the inclusion of traditional techniques such as Nalbinding for their lampshade cords, together with a desire to develop concepts and ideas for interior products and lighting with an ethos of sustainability.
