About the Films

Why Not Scotland? is a feature-length documentary, which forms a central part of the Alliance’s Rewilding Nation campaign. The film accompanies Flo, a young Scot from Glasgow, on an intensely personal journey, as she seeks out examples of nature recovery around Europe. Like many of her generation, Flo is concerned by the state of nature and fearful about an uncertain future. However, during her travels, she discovers places where nature is making a spectacular comeback, breathing life back into the landscape and revitalising human communities. Encouraged by these stories of hope and renewal, she is prompted to wonder: Why Not Scotland? (

Balancing the Scales is a powerful, visually stunning documentary that captures hope amid environmental uncertainty. Through candid interviews with leading experts, this film unpacks the intricate relationship between beavers and migratory fish – revealing the opportunities beavers create and the unique challenges they introduce in our modern landscapes.

Fools & Dreamers: Regenerating a Native Forest is a 30-minute documentary about Hinewai Nature Reserve, on New Zealand’s Banks Peninsula, and its kaitiaki/manager of 30 years, botanist Hugh Wilson. When, in 1987, Hugh let the local community know of his plans to allow the introduced ‘weed’ gorse to grow as a nurse canopy to regenerate farmland into native forest, people were not only sceptical but outright angry – the plan was the sort to be expected only of “fools and dreamers”.

The Last Repair Shop In a nondescript warehouse in the heart of Los Angeles, a dwindling handful of devoted craftspeople maintain over 80,000 student musical instruments, the largest remaining workshop in America of its kind. Meet four unforgettable characters whose broken-and-repaired lives have been dedicated to bringing so much more than music to the schoolchildren of the recording capital of the world.

From Devil’s Breath is a 2021 documentary film about the devastating 2017 wildfires in Portugal, which killed 120 people. Directed by Orlando von Einsiedel and produced by Chloe Leland, Harri Grace, and Leonardo DiCaprio, the film chronicles the community’s fight for survival, their efforts to ensure the tragedy doesn’t repeat, and the scientific and restoration-based solutions being developed to combat climate change. It features survivor testimonies and highlights the resilience of the community in the face of tragedy.
